Suppliers like to quote the hardest materials available because high Rockwell numbers help sell tooling. They will promote cemented carbide or ultra‑high‑carbon tool steels like T8A, promising maximum wear resistance. In terms of wear, they are correct. However, when that glass hammer hits a nail, the impact energy has nowhere to dissipate. Cemented carbide offers extreme surface hardness but almost no core ductility, which makes it highly susceptible to failure under the sharp, sudden impact of a heavy bending operation. If your scrap bin is full of shattered steel, purchasing a “harder” die is precisely what will guarantee the next failure. You must require the supplier to diagnose your specific situation.
Demanding the Complete Data Sheet: Surface HRC, Case Depth, and Core Toughness
A costly mistake occurs when a fabricator accepts a quote for a T10A carbon steel punch described only as “60–64 HRC.” They install it in the ram, bring it down on a heavy piece of AR400 plate, and see it fail on the first cycle. The tool does not merely crack; it shatters. The buyer assumes the steel was defective, but the material performed exactly as its incomplete specification allowed.
When a supplier states that a tool is 60 HRC, your immediate response should be: “Where, and how deep?”
A uniformly through‑hardened tool at 60 HRC is a grenade waiting for the pin to be pulled. You need the complete data sheet to confirm that you are buying an anvil—a hardened shell surrounding a shock‑absorbing core. Demand the exact surface Rockwell hardness. Demand the case depth in thousandths of an inch. Demand the core toughness. If a die is sold with a 58 HRC surface, you must know whether that hardness extends .020 inches or .120 inches, and you must confirm that the core remains at a ductile 30 HRC. Heat‑treatment variability in carbon steels can easily shift case depth out of tolerance, converting a tough tool into a brittle one without changing the surface specification. If the supplier cannot provide these three specific values, end the conversation.
A Practical Framework for Upgrading Tooling Based on Your Primary Failure Mode
Data without application is merely trivia. Once you have obtained the exact surface HRC, case depth, and core toughness from your supplier, you must match those values directly to the scrap‑bin diagnosis you performed earlier.
If your primary failure mode is galling and premature wear from high‑volume, low‑tonnage mild steel, prioritize a high surface hardness (58–60 HRC) with a shallow case depth (.030 inches) and an excellent surface polish. In this scenario, the core is less critical because impact forces are minimal. If, however, your primary failure mode is catastrophic spalling and cracking from bottoming heavy plate, you must deliberately reduce surface hardness. Lower the specification to 50 HRC, require a substantial .100‑inch case depth to spread the compressive load, and insist on a 30 HRC core to absorb the kinetic shock.
